UNDEFINED TERRITORIES is a series of subtle and intimate interventions that use the language of photography, framing and installation; inviting the viewer to explore their own process of looking. The works included in this project speak to the sublime. But just as with the sublime the they evade easy definition. In many ways this project is an un-folding that explores a process of vision. It is not about the artist’s looking, but the process of cognitive looking that one experiences. The realities here are without fixed limit and indefinite in extent. Unfixed in meaning but fixed in their ability to direct sight.
The linear is dissolved in favour of an arbitrary flitting, repetition and winding. The temporal nature of experiencing brings to the fore the way one navigates through the space. And in this perception is underlined, becoming both content and subject. Reflection links space, time, light and the viewer. In the moment of looking one perceives ones own perceiving. Momentarily arrested in the awareness of looking, and in that moment considering something other than just what is seen. This project seeks to name the un-defined and give meaning to what is, by acknowledging what is not. We can always understand things by what they are not. Because the possibilities of what something isn’t are infinite. There is never a single answer.
